What is the Mercedes CLA?

CLA is the best-looking, best-driving A-Class – but it sacrifices outright practicality for looks.

Despite its size, the Mercedes CLA aspires to be something much bigger. No matter which spec you choose, it proves to be a refined, comfortable commuter, no matter how sharp it is to drive. It handles neatly, predictably and is perfect for commuting up and down the motorway. The beautifully built, tech-laden interior is a real selling point; only an E-Class feels quite as luxurious.

About the CLA-Class

In 2013, Mercedes introduced the CLA as a swoopy four-door based on the second-generation A-Class, bringing mini-CLS styling to an otherwise conservative segment. The latest model, introduced in 2019, follows a similar recipe.

A Mercedes CLA shooting break was then introduced. With the Shooting Brake tag, the CLA is more about style than capacity. The CLA Shooting Brake looks great with its low front end and sweeping roofline. Engines range from a 1.3-liter petrol with 136bhp in the CLA 180 up to the AMG-fettled CLA 45S’ turbocharged 2.0-litre with 415bhp. However, buyers of the CLA are not expected to care too much – it’s marketed as the sportiest A-Class derivative and boasts a few mechanical tweaks designed to make it moreexciting to drive.

There are a variety of petrol, diesel, and hybrid engines available, all mated exclusively to automatic transmissions. Trim levels are familiar but start in what is the mid-range for the standard car: AMG Line, AMG Line Premium, AMG Line Premium Plus and the two sporty AMG-developed offerings – CLA 35 and 45.

A CLA comes with a wide range of engine options, as with most Mercedes models. Many of these engines are petrol-powered; 1.3 and 2.0-liter engines with different outputs. As for the fossil fuel versions, the CLA 220d diesel is the best bet if low running costs are your primary concern. On the other hand, the 250e plug-in hybrid is the best performer across the range when it comes to economy. It is claimed that the 250 e can return up to 282.5 mpg on a combined cycle when charged regularly.

Since the CLA is closely related to the A-Class hatchback, it comes fully equipped with safety features. With every car, you get autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, a driver attention monitor, cruise control, traffic sign recognition, parking assistance, and blind spot assistance as standard. The CLA received a top five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2019, with a score of 96 percent for occupant protection and 91 percent for child safety.
