What is the Audi A3 and how does it drive?

Since 1996 the Audi A3 has been around. It first was introduced to rival the popular Volkswagen golf. Now in its fourth generation, the A3 has continued to set the benchmark, offering big-car luxury and a desirable appeal that others still find hard to match.

Driving an Audi A3

The Audi A3 comes in both petrol and diesel form. With petrol coming in the form of either a 1.0-litre unit with 109bhp, badged 30 TFSI, or a 1.5-litre engine with 148bhp, labelled 35 TFSI. The 2.0-litre 40 TFSI quattro with 187bhp has been removed from the price list. Also, diesel been pared back to a single oil burning option: the 148bhp 35 TDI. Previously, buyers also had the 114bhp 30 TDI and the 197bhp 40 TDI to choose from. The Sportback TFSI e plug-in hybrid model is available in Sport, S line and S line Competition trim levels. With a 1.4-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, the 40 TFSI e produces 201 bhp and the 45 TFSI e produces 242 bhp. As a result, the 1.5 litre engine produces 148 horsepower and pulls handsomely from 2000 rpm on and spins freely all the way to the engines redline. The manual gearbox hits 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds.

The Audi A3 Design

With the A3, you can expect a predictable, secure, and engaging handling experience. For the Technik and Sport versions, this is true, but it is most apparent with the S line trim or higher with stiffer, sports suspension. Their grip on the road is excellent, with a wonderful balance front-to-rear that leaves you and the A3 completely unfazed by any fast changes of direction or imperfections in the middle of corners. In comparison to the TFSI, the TFSIe plug-in hybrid versions carry a bit more weight, mostly due to the battery pack, and aren’t quite as agile.

With the success of the third generation, Audi hasn’t really changed their A3. A large honeycomb grille, along with aggressive side vents and angular LED headlights, defines the Audi family look. With entry-level Technik cars, you get 16-inch alloy wheels, power-folding mirrors, air conditioning, a sat-nav, Bluetooth, and a DAB radio as standard equipment. Upgrading to Sport specification brings 17-inch alloys, Audi Drive Select, leather upholstery, climate control and matt black exterior trim. The car comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel as standard, with an optional 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit system.

In the A3 range, there are only five-door Sportback and four-door Saloon models available; there are no convertibles or three-door models. The A3 offers not only premium luxury but also a choice of fine manual or automatic transmissions.
