Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 has been gracing our roads for more than 50 years and is now into its eighth generation. It has a wide range of models and variants as you can see via the link, https://www.porsche.com/uk/models/ We’re going to dig into Carrera and Carrera S models, which are offered as coupes and Cabriolets, with either rear- or all-wheel drive options.

Engines and Drive

Porsche 911s are powered by 3.0-litre turbocharged flat-six engines with an eight-speed PDK automatic transmission. There is 380bhp on a standard Carrera model with the Carrera S having 444bhp. Even though the Carrera S boasts the same power output as the previous 911 GTS, it’s still as punchy as the Porsche 911 GTS from the previous generation. An upgraded turbocharger and repositioned intercoolers (now on top of the engine) offer better intake air cooling. Torque of 530Nm from 2,300rpm to 5,000rpm (revolutions per minute), sustained over a relatively wide speed range.

A standard Carrera coupe hits 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, or four seconds dead with the optional Sport Chrono package with top speeds hitting 179mph. The Carrera Cabriolet speeds from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds or 4.2 with Sport Chrono and having a top speed of 182mph. In the rear wheel drive, the Carrera S hits 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds but when the sport chrono package is added the time drops by 0.2 seconds to 3.5 seconds.

Practicality of the Porsche 911

With a little more room inside the 911, it feels a more spacious drive, but engineers added even more agility to make it feel like it’s not too much bigger than before. This was always the case but now there’s more comfort on offer too. It’s also worth mentioning that the 911’s 64-litre fuel tank provides a good cruising range when combined with the respectable efficiency. On average, Porsche 911s consumes 27.4 MPG.

In the 911 the cabin space is good. Although Porsche have changed the design, the layout remains similar. The 911 is 4mm taller than the last generation so there is slightly more headroom. Due to the 911 being a sports car the rear seats could carry children with ease, there is not much room in for adults
