The Mercedes A-Class is the smallest bestselling, Mercedes. With its shark-like front, sleek exterior design, and a three-pointed star on both front and back. A- Class engines are made up of two diesels and four petrol units. The A180d and A200d both use a 2.0-litre unit. The A180 and A200 are 1.3 litre turbo while the A250 uses a 2.0 litre engine.

How reliable is the Mercedes A-Class?

The A-Class is solid in terms of reliability, it was assessed by Euro NCAP in 2018 and achieved a maximum five-star safety rating. Both Adult and child protection both scored over 60%. It also has automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance. Like the E-Class it also has the Mercedes attention assist which looks for drowsiness in the driver. All A-Class models include cruise control, heated seats and dual-zone and climate control.

Is a Mercedes A-Class expensive to maintain?

Mercedes claims the A 250 e hybrid has an all-electric range of 43-44 miles, which is equivalent to a staggering 282.5mpg. However, with frequent charging, you could reasonably run this car for months without filling it up with fuel. In addition to being relatively frugal, the diesel A-Class options offer good fuel economy. When paired with the eight-speed auto transmission, the A 180 d is claimed to achieve 56.5mpg and emit 132g/km of CO2. The A 180 d starts from group 18 insurance, while the A200 d in top AMG Line Premium Plus spec is in group 23. Further up the range, a high-end A 250 falls into group 31, while the 415bhp AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ Plus will be pricey to insure, sitting in group 41.

Owners and insurers will have to pay handsomely for a new A-Class, but its residual values have averaged 54 per cent over three years and 36,000 miles. During the same 36-month period, the A 250 models held on to around 57% of their original value.
